2022 ROBERT BURNS SCOTTISH FESTIVAL IS PROMISING TO BE GREAT FESTIVAL WITH A FULL PROGRAM OF EVENTS

The 2022 Robert Burns Scottish Festival is set to return to Camperdown 1-2-3 July this year. The Festivals Chairperson, Dr John Menzies OAM is pleased to announce that festival is going ahead and promises to be a great festival.  After two years of Covid restrictions and limited festival events last year due to the Covid restrictions the committee are working hard to ensure that Patrons and the local community are able to enjoy a full festival in 2022.

The committee have invited back the musicians who were to perform at last years cancelled festival. These include The Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, Fiona Ross and Shane O’Mara, Claire Patti,  Austral, and The Cornerhouse Band. A line-up of talented local bands and musicians including Pete Daffy and his band, The Twa Bards, Tuniversal Music Group, Camperdown’s Lakes and Craters Band and the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums.

Scottish and Irish Fiddler Laura Flanagan, is our International Act, coming from the USA. She will be performing at this year’s festival and also conducting a series of Fiddle workshops.   Laura is based in Texas and arrives in Australia in early June. The committee is looking forward to hosting Laura, it will be a real treat to see her play.

The RBSF will see the return of the School Children’s program with primary and secondary aged events including Art works, poetry, story writing and the popular Shortbread baking competition – Click here to download the entry form. These activities will happen before the festival and be delivered in the schools. Dr Menzies also said that Schools can access programs from the Robert Burns World Federation at no cost and connecting to Scotland, the birth place of Burns is a wonderful opportunity for students, to learn more about the Bard and his works.

The Festival committee is continuing with the Satellite Concerts and two events will be held; one at Darlington on June 25th, with live music and a movie night. The second event will be at the Commercial Hotel in Terang on the Thursday 30th of June, featuring Laura Flanagan and Tuniversal Music group

The Gala Dinner will be held at the Theatre Royal on Friday the 1st of July and promises to be a sumptuous and authentic Scottish meal including an Address to the Haggis, with entertainment from our headline performers, booking will be essential and numbers will be capped at 100. VIP/guest speaker/deliverer of the ‘Immortal Memory’ will be  Prof. Stewart Gill, OAM, Master of Queens College, Melbourne University. The popular Music Workshops will be held on the Wednesday, 29th June, Thursday 30th June and Friday 1st of July at the Commercial Hotel in Terang, and culminate with a student concert on the Friday evening at St Paul’s Church Hall in Camperdown.

The workshops cater for all levels from Beginners to Intermediate players and singers. Ticketing for the workshops is essential so materials can be sent out to participants.

International guest Fiddler Laura Flanagan will be taking Fiddle and Violin workshops, with Geoff MacArthur from Ballarat taking Guitar, Peter Moir on the Bodhran and Drum with Tin Whistle and Harp workshops with Merran Moir, harps will be provided for participants.  Instrumental Workshops are $50.00 / instrument, for three sessions per person.

On Saturday the 2nd of July Claire Patti is conducting a Festival Choir workshop that is open to anyone who would like to join the fun!  The Melbourne vocalist from Melbourne will coach the participants and perform with them at her concert on Saturday afternoon.  Claire says “At Camperdown Burns festival, I have had the great pleasure working with singers young and old, and everything in-between.  Now post covid, I can’t wait to see new and old faces and share in some much missed harmony singing!  The more the merrier, all standards welcome.” Just $5.00 per Adult and Students Free for the Festival Choir.

The deliciously fun Cookery Class will be happening with Liz Patterson and Ruth Gstrein which gave participants the opportunity to cook authentic Scottish food and eat a meal at the end of the session. Booking will be essential due to limited class sizes. This event will happen after the festival: on 6th July at Camperdown College Food Tech Centre – cost will be $25pp and a limit of 10 people.

Lecture co-ordinator Bob Lambell has organised four wonderful guest speakers for Saturday the 2nd July to be held at the Killara Centre, details can be found here.  Topics include; The Manifolds, their horses, and the Scottish connection, Dealing with the De’il – Robert Burns as the Exciseman, Vision and patronage: von Guérard and the Scots of the Western District, Two Scottish engineers – Telford and McAdam – and their legacy to the World’s roads, and “Some rambles with the Campbells” – The life and times of Western District pastoralist and politician, Colin Campbell (1817-1903) and his family.
