Press Release – Robert Burns Celtic Festival 2024
From 2024 Camperdown’s Iconic Robert Burns Scottish Festival will be re-branded as the Robert Burns Celtic Festival and held on 21st – 23rd of June, 2024.
Enjoyment of Robert Burns artistry, and appreciation of his independent philosophy saw enthusiastic embracement amongst his Celtic neighbours, especially the Irish in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Given the substantial Scottish and Irish migration to South West Victoria in the 19th century the Festival committee has chosen to adjust describing its festival to reflect this, hence we now have a new name that captures Burns Beyond Scotland ‘The 2024 Camperdown Robert Burns Celtic Festival’. This change to a Celtic festival expands our ability to include performers from Ireland, Wales and England while retaining connections to regular Scottish performers.
The Robert Burns Celtic Festival is a winter literary and music festival, celebrating Scotland’s national Poet and the Celtic culture in poetry, song, music and dance, in and around the historic buildings of Camperdown.
Dr John Menzies OAM, Chair of the festival is delighted to announce that The Melbourne Welsh Male Choir is coming to Camperdown to perform at the Festival Finale Concert.
Dr Menzies said “Since its inception the choir has grown into one of Australia’s acclaimed male choirs, known for the quality and spirit of its four-part harmonies. The choir is steeped in the choral traditions, but is still proudly Australian and has many members from diverse nationalities. It honours its Welsh roots by singing at least 25% of its repertoire as Welsh songs, with at least half of these in the Welsh language, Europe’s oldest living language. The Choir has travelled and performed internationally including London’s Royal Albert Hall. “
The 2024 Robert Burns Celtic festival will also host the President of the Robert Burns World Federation, Mr Neil McNair. He will be in Camperdown for the Festival as part of his International tour, and it is hoped he will Address the Haggis at the Gala Dinner and speak at the festival Lectures.
Already booked to perform at the 2024 festival are The Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, Fiona Ross, exciting young band Melbourne Band Apolline, The Twa Bards, Merran Moir, Pete Daffy and Band, and Tuniversal Music Group. All confirmed they are coming to the Camperdown in June with more musicians to be booked, the festival will be a weekend full of music.
A new component will be a Choir competition and with the formation of Camperdown’s own Celtic Choir, invited Choirs will perform on the Saturday.
Returning is the ever popular Gala Dinner and Festival Lectures, At the Statue with the Twa Bards and the Festival Finale Concert on the Sunday. A series of Concert performances and music will be at the Theatre Royal, Killara and local businesses. The Schools Arts project, Street Activation, market stalls, music in the Avenue will continue and look out for Flash Mob moments and random performances over the weekend!
Coming to Camperdown next year will be Highland and Irish Dancers, along with the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums. Peter Daffy will head a Celtic Ceilidh Band bringing together a troop of wonderful Musicians to perform over the weekend. A Family Ceilidh Dance on Saturday night is promising to be a great night. Catherine O’Flynn, Festival coordinator is currently booking Musicians for the Festival in June and the line-up of bands and musicians will not disappoint.

Mr Beck is in Australia and performing at the Melbourne Tartan Festival. Tenor Alan Beck studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He later won the entrance scholarship to the Postgraduate Opera Course at the Royal Northern College of Music. In 1995 Alan won the British Wagner Society Singing Competition at Covent Garden and was subsequently awarded the society’s Bayreuth Bursary. Later that year, he also won the Wolfgang Wagner Singing Competition in London in front of Dr Wagner and Dame Gwyneth Jones.
He made his operatic début in 1995 for Opera Ireland and was a principal tenor with the State Opera, Stuttgart from 1996 to 2002, singing many roles in the German and central European repertoire. Alan has also sung principal tenor roles for Lyric Opera Dublin and the Carl Rosa Opera and in 2002 he made his début as Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walküre at the London Coliseum for English National Opera. Most recently he has been busy singing with Welsh National Opera as Bacchus in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos and appearing as Eisenstein in Haddo House Opera’s 60th anniversary production of Die Fledermaus.
Alan has sung all over the world – throughout Australia, New Zealand, South America, USA, Canada and Europe as well as in the UK and all over Scotland. Alan is also a keen composer and has had three children’s musicals commissioned by Creative Scotland. His latest composition was chosen to close Education Scotland’s launch of the new National Framework for Singing at the Royal Concert Hall and was performed by over 2,000 children. Local Musical Director of the Lakes and Crater Band Jane McSween will be accompanying Alan on the piano, her musicality and experience brings a wonderful touch to this special night.
Also performing is Howlin’ Wind, the international flute player and composer; Australia’s most innovative and expressive exponent of the flute. Howlin’ aims to “give the flute a far more vocal, more passionate, and vastly more expressive sound” through his own composition, performances, and recordings. His flute compositions have been used in many films and TV series, including Peter Garret’s Shoalhaven Bay”, Fred Hollows’ Life and Times, Channel 9 TV series Ray Martin Gallipoli Special, many Brian Naylor’s Travel Shows, Getaway, The Great Outdoors and many of Burkes Backyard Films. Howlin’s music combines sophisticated classical traditions with earthy folk roots and an implicit understanding of Australia’s indigenous song lines.
